Artist bio

Randrea TaNiece is a Houston-based educator, dance artist, and scholar who emphasizes Black history, culture, and aesthetic. She earned her MFA in Dance from Texas Woman’s University where her research centered on Embodiment as a Literary Teaching Tool as she used Black literature to create choreographic works that decolonize and liberate Black women’s bodies. She has presented lectures on Harlem Renaissance discourse and its relationship to dance and served as a guest lecturer at University of North Texas and Texas Woman’s University. She presented a Site-based performance art and lecture presentation on the historic, based African American community, Quakertown in the 2019 Artswalk: Learning the Land in Denton, TX. She has performed at the GeografÍa Latinx Contemporary Dance Festival, and her choreography was commissioned for Decolonizing Dance: Celebrating Bodies of Color dance festival in San Antonio, TX. She was granted a scholarship to conduct experiential movement research with Contra-Tiempo Activist Dance Theater; a Los Angeles based dance company that embraces activism through Afro-Latin diasporic dances.

Randrea TaNiece’s dance experiences encompasses an eclectic blend of movement vocabularies that spans the teachings and choreographic works from Dr. Matthey Henley, Mary Williford-Shade, Ana Maria Alvarez, Sarah Gamblin, Teresa Chapman, and Becky Valls.

Alongside her MFA in Dance, Randrea TaNiece also holds an MAT in Secondary Education from Relay Graduate School of Education and a BA in Communications-Advertising from the University of Houston. Randrea TaNiece now holds the position of Head Dance Director at Hightower High School as the award winning varsity Hi-Lites Dance Team coach in Missouri City, TX. She has choreographed for the dance teams, classes, and Poseidon’s Playhouse theater productions. She is also a World Champion Choreographer and coach with PRO Status Houston. She specializes in contemporary modern technique, jazz technique, and her curated technique she calls Aesthetics of the African Diaspora. As an educator, she has developed and presented numerous professional developments and serves as an education and leadership training consultant. Randrea TaNiece’s focus is to develop multi-faceted dancers for the contemporary dance world.
